If I were asked what the name of my favorite protein would be, it would definitely have to be pork. I never turn down pork, and whether it’s bacon and ham or tenderloin, there is always something fun and amazing to be done with it. I mean you guys have all heard the saying that “everything is better with bacon” right? I mean it’s just a known fact!
Although I find myself to be a self-proclaimed bacon addict, pork tenderloins and pork roasts have to be my favorite cuts. Enter this Asian slow cooker New York pork roast. You guys. It’s just perfect. It requires little work and simple ingredients; and I don’t know about you, but I fall in love with any recipe that has the words “slow cooker” in the title.
I love pork roast for this time of year. We are all bunkering down, staying out of the cold, and cranking up those ovens and slow cookers. I don’t think my slow cooker gets a day of rest all season long. I am not ashamed, and you shouldn’t be either!
One of my favorite uses for it is when I’m entertaining. Whether it’s a large gathering of our closest friends or hosting just a few close family members that slow cooker gets quite the workout. Let’s be honest, we want to spend most of our time actually entertaining those guests, not spending all evening in the kitchen.
During the holiday season, we are all in kind of a thankful and giving mood. It’s a time of year when everyone is thinking a little less of themselves and a little more about the people they cherish most. The National Pork Board is sending out the most wonderful message this year with their Porksgiving campaign. They started this campaign in order to inspire people this time of year to take a step back and say thanks using pork! What better way is there to say thanks, but with a home-cooked meal? The folks over at the National Pork Board are asking us to show our appreciation this Porksgiving by serving up a new recipe with pork and inspired by someone who has touched our lives!
Every year I try to think of who I’m most thankful for. It will sometimes be a world leader or an inspiring icon, but most of the time it’s someone I hold near and dear. With so much unrest in the world right now, the person I think of most is my father. He has donated so much of his time and energy as a member of the United States Air Force, and it’s him and his sacrifices that make me so proud! Also, my dad is basically OBSESSED with pork, so as I was creating this dish, all I could think of was him! It will be the perfect dish to serve him when he comes and visits over New Year’s Eve. I’m dedicating this Asian Slow Cooker New York Pork Roast to you dad! ;)

- 2-3 pound boneless New York pork roast
- 2 tablespoons Chinese five spice
- 2 tablespoons + 3/4 cup brown sugar (divided)
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper (divided)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons + 1/2 cup cold water (divided)
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- Garnish: Cilantro and lime edges (optional)
- Place the pork roast in your slow cooker.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the Chinese five spice, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
- Rub the spice mixture all over the pork roast (including the bottom). Pour 1 cup of water around the side of the pork roast. Try not to pour it over top. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours. When there is about 20 minutes left on the cooking time, prepare your glaze.
- In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of cold water until dissolved. Set aside.
- To a large saucepan, add 1/2 cup of the remaining cold water, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper, and 3/4 cup brown sugar. Bring to a simmer and then stir in the cornstarch mixture. Continue to stir until the glaze has thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Remove the pork from the slow cooker and discard the liquid. Generously brush the pork with the glaze while the pork is still hot. Serve the remaining glaze on the side.
- Serve the pork with chopped fresh cilantro and lime wedges. Enjoy!
