Pair with a Smoked Porter
I debated on whether or not to post this recipe right now. First off, we are getting out of summer season foods. For most, grilling burgers becomes a thing of the past. I thought about waiting until next spring, but honestly I didn’t really want to wait that long. Second of all, I have come to terms with the fact that I hate photographing sandwiches and burgers. I can never get them just the way I want, which is why there are only two photos of them.
The burger gods are against me when it comes to photographing them. Ugh.
For a hot minute I thought about getting rid of the post altogether, but then I thought “what a waste. I can’t do that.” I then thought about the fact that Zach and I grill all year round. 10 feet of snow and -20 degrees F has nothing on us.
With football season beginning, people will still be grilling right? I think so. In the end, here we are, and I’ve decided to post this recipe for Hawaiian teriyaki burgers anyway. They really are delicious you guys, and the Hawaiian teriyaki sauce makes it. It’s so easy to make yourself that I promise you won’t buy the store-bought stuff again. I like to make a big batch and store it for quick marinades and/or sauces.

- 1 cup soy sauce
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup pineapple juice
- 2 tablespoons bourbon
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
- 2 cloves of garlic, mashed into a paste
- nonstick canola oil spray
- 1 pound ground beef, seasoned and formed into 4 equal-sized patties
- 4 slices muenster cheese
- 4 brioche buns, lightly toasted
- 4 leaves of green leaf lettuce
- 4 slices of pineapple
- 8 slices of bacon, cooked until crisp
- 1 avocado, pitted, peeled and sliced
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
- Add all ingredients for the Hawaiian teriyaki sauce in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir frequently until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Store in an airtight container for 2 weeks.
- Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Spray with a nonstick spray, and add the burgers. Cook for about 4 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Melt the cheese on the burgers for the last two minutes of cooking time. Remove from heat and set aside to rest.
- Assemble your burgers by layering the burger patties, lettuce, pineapple, bacon and avocado on the toasted buns. Drizzle with Hawaiian teriyaki sauce and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Enjoy immediately!
